Swiss public opinion shifts in favor of nuclear energy

In a significant departure from post-Fukushima sentiment, Swiss public opinion has markedly shifted in favor of nuclear energy. According to a recent poll conducted by gfs.bern for the Association of Swiss Electricity Companies (AES), 56% of Swiss citizens now support reconsidering the construction of new nuclear power plants. This represents the first majority backing for nuclear power since Switzerland announced its nuclear phase-out policy in the wake of the Fukushima disaster.

Energy security has emerged as the paramount concern among Swiss citizens, with 45% of respondents citing it as their top priority. Cost considerations and climate neutrality follow closely behind, at 29% and 26% respectively. While the public broadly supports the government's energy strategy, with 59% viewing the recent electricity law positively, there's growing frustration with the pace of change. A significant 63% of Swiss citizens believe the energy transition is moving too slowly, potentially contributing to the shifting attitudes toward nuclear power.

Despite the growing openness to nuclear power, support for renewable energy remains remarkably strong in Switzerland. Rooftop solar installations enjoy nearly universal support at 94%, matched by equally strong backing for hydropower expansion (92%) and energy efficiency improvements (94%). This suggests that the Swiss public views nuclear power not as a replacement for renewables, but as a potential complement to achieve energy security and climate goals.

While support for nuclear power is growing, Swiss pragmatism remains evident in public attitudes. A substantial 74% of respondents acknowledge that new nuclear plants cannot address immediate supply challenges. The 'Stop the Blackout' initiative, which seeks constitutional guarantees for energy security, has yet to gain majority support, with 46% in favor and 48% opposed. Switzerland appears to be moving toward a more balanced energy approach, where all environmentally sound technologies – including nuclear – are considered as part of the solution to the country's energy challenges.
