Critical Avalanche Risk: Southern Swiss Alps Under Level 4 Alert

The WSL Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research (SLF) has issued a high-level avalanche warning for the southern Swiss Alps, placing several regions under alert level 4 out of 5. This severe warning comes as a response to significant snowfall and deteriorating conditions in the region, marking one of the most serious avalanche risk situations of the season.

The level 4 avalanche warning specifically covers the lower Maggia valleys, the Riviera, the lower Leventina, and the Blenio Valley. Surrounding areas remain at level 3, indicating considerable danger. The combination of fresh snow and an unstable old snow surface has created particularly hazardous conditions across these regions, with both natural and human-triggered avalanches possible.

Recent meteorological data shows substantial snowfall accumulation, with 30-50 centimeters of fresh snow recorded above 2,000 meters from Sunday to Thursday. Additional snowfall of 15-30 centimeters is expected by Friday afternoon along the main Alpine ridge from Lukmanier Pass to the Bernina region. The forecast predicts another 15-30 centimeters of snow above 1,400 meters in southern regions by Saturday, further elevating the avalanche risk.

The SLF strongly advises against off-piste snow sports activities, stating that conditions are particularly unfavorable for winter sports away from prepared routes. Individual winter sports enthusiasts could trigger avalanches in dangerous areas, and spontaneous avalanches are also possible. Special attention should be paid to wet snow and gliding avalanches at medium altitudes. Authorities recommend strictly adhering to marked trails and following all local safety guidelines.
