UK Visa Requirement Coming for Swiss Travelers

In a significant change to travel requirements, Swiss citizens will soon need to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before entering the United Kingdom. This new requirement comes into effect from April 2, 2025, marking the end of visa-free travel for Swiss nationals to the UK. The application system opens on March 5, 2025, allowing travelers to prepare well in advance of the implementation date.

The ETA application process has been designed to be straightforward and digital-first. Applications can be submitted either through the official online portal or via dedicated mobile applications available for both iPhone and Android devices. The UK government specifically recommends using the mobile app option for the most efficient experience. Applicants will need to provide a valid passport, an email address, and a payment method. The current fee is set at £10, though this is planned to increase to £16 in the future to reduce taxpayer subsidization of the border system. Processing times can take up to three days, so travelers are advised to apply well in advance of their intended travel date.

Once issued, the ETA remains valid for two years from the date of approval. During this period, it allows multiple visits to the UK, with each stay lasting up to 6 months. The authorization covers various purposes including tourism, visiting family and friends, business activities, and short-term study. However, it's important to note that possessing an ETA does not guarantee entry into the UK - travelers must still satisfy border control requirements upon arrival. The authorization simply pre-clears travelers for arrival at the UK border.

Several categories of travelers are exempt from the ETA requirement. These include UK and Irish citizens, as well as those who already hold a UK entry or residence visa. Currently, passengers transiting through UK airports without passing through border control may also be exempt, though this exception is under review and may be removed in the future. The UK appears to be following a similar model to the US ESTA system, potentially moving towards requiring ETAs even for transit passengers.

This new requirement represents a significant change for Swiss travelers, who have long enjoyed visa-free access to the UK. While the ETA system adds an extra step and cost to travel planning, it aims to enhance border security while maintaining relatively straightforward access for Swiss citizens. The two-year validity period means frequent travelers need only apply occasionally, though the planned fee increase to £16 will make each application more costly. Swiss travelers are advised to familiarize themselves with the new requirements and plan accordingly, especially during the initial implementation period when processing times may vary.
