Species Characteristics
Both newly discovered species belong to the genus Barbatula, commonly known as bearded gobies or common loaches. Despite their shared genus, these species have evolved to thrive in distinctly different habitats. Barbatula fluvicola has adapted to the dynamic environment of fast-flowing streams and rivers within the Rhine system. In contrast, Barbatula ommata has made its home in the more tranquil waters of the Aare system, specifically in Lakes Neuchâtel, Biel, Lucerne, Zurich, and Walen. Public Naming Process
In an unprecedented move to engage the public with scientific discovery, the research team invited Swiss citizens to participate in naming these new species. Nearly 2,000 people took part in the survey, choosing between carefully selected scientific names. For the first species, participants chose between Barbatula fluvicola and Barbatula amnicus, while the second species' options were Barbatula ommata and Barbatula limnicus. The chosen epithets reflect distinctive characteristics of each fish species, making the names both scientifically meaningful and publicly accessible.
