Agriculture is under pressure, while low groundwater reserves raise questions about how communities will secure supplies if the dry spell persists.

In the south, the crisis has already forced cross-border coordination. After an emergency meeting, the body responsible for regulating Lake Maggiore authorised a larger outflow from Lake Lugano. Italian authorities had raised concerns about critical levels and the threat to rice-growing districts downstream around Novara, Lomellina and Milan.
The message is stark: water shortages ignore national borders, even in a country famous for abundant lakes.
Rivers Wither as Forests Turn Autumn-Brown
Swiss rivers are shrinking into fragmented channels, turning a national drought into an ecological emergency. Images from across the country show the River Emme and River Töss reduced to dry beds, while algae carpets sections of the Thur. In Thurgau, a protective net has been installed over the Geisslibach to shield fish from extreme summer heat.
The danger is not simply that less water flows downstream. Low levels concentrate heat and pollutants, reduce refuge for aquatic life and leave fish increasingly vulnerable as shallow channels warm. At Lake Les Brenets on the French-Swiss border, the retreat is driven not only by drought but also by water seeping into the subsoil.
Forests are sending their own warning. Trees above Lake Biel, Le Landeron and other parts of the country have taken on premature autumn colours, signalling severe stress after weeks of heat and limited rain. The same landscape that normally defines the Swiss summer—green meadows, cool streams and resilient woodland—is turning brittle.
The Federal Office for the Environment says the drought has produced dry soils and low surface and groundwater levels. That combination matters: even a sudden shower may run off hardened ground rather than replenish deeper reserves. Switzerland’s ecosystems are now waiting for sustained recovery, not a brief splash of rain.
Rain Is Coming—But It Cannot Repair the Damage Overnight
The forecast finally promises rain—but Switzerland needs a sustained reversal, not a temporary reprieve. MeteoSwiss expects precipitation across all regions between Thursday and Friday, with early estimates of 10 to 20 millimetres on each day. The heaviest rainfall is likely south of the Alps, and forecasts suggest the final week of August could receive above-seasonal totals.
That would bring immediate relief to farmers, forests and rivers. Temperatures are also expected to fall into a more comfortable summer range, easing pressure on people, animals and overheated waterways. Yet scattered showers earlier in the week did little to restore the landscape because they failed to penetrate the deep layers of soil.
The contrast is crucial. A storm can refill a stream quickly while leaving groundwater and agricultural soils depleted. Heavy rain can also run off parched land rather than soak in, limiting its power to repair the underlying deficit.
Meanwhile, Switzerland’s lakes are unusually warm as well as low. Persistent heat has pushed many waters towards the upper end of normal summer temperatures, raising concerns for swimmers and freshwater ecosystems. Rain may end this chapter of the drought, but it cannot erase months of accumulated stress overnight.
