"regional project of the century"
In a significant development for the Upper Engadine region, voters have approved a CHF 38 million credit package for the expansion of Samedan Airport, one of Europe's highest-altitude airports. The referendum saw a robust 45.64% turnout, with 2,443 residents voting in favor against 2,051 opposing votes, resulting in a 54.36% approval rate. This democratic decision marks a crucial milestone for the airport's modernization plans, despite notable opposition from several municipalities.
The comprehensive renovation project, dubbed the 'regional project of the century,' encompasses several major infrastructure improvements. The CHF 68.5 million development includes the construction of two new operations centers with aircraft hangars, extension and refurbishment of aprons, a modern airport tower, and the installation of an extensive security fence. The project aims to modernize the aging facility while maintaining its crucial role in serving the prestigious resorts of St. Moritz and Davos.
The approval comes despite significant opposition from six municipalities, including Samedan itself, highlighting the complex dynamics of regional development. While these municipalities voted against the expansion, the overall regional vote prevails according to local governance structures. The project has been a subject of debate for years, reflecting the challenges of balancing local concerns with broader regional development goals.
The expansion project represents a strategic investment in the region's tourism infrastructure. Serving the world-renowned resorts of St. Moritz and Davos, the modernized airport will enhance accessibility for high-end tourism and business travel. The substantial financial commitment, with CHF 38 million coming from the 11 municipalities, demonstrates the region's dedication to maintaining its position as a premier Alpine destination. The upgrade is expected to improve operational efficiency and safety while accommodating modern aircraft requirements.
