GastroSuisse President Beat Imhof is calling for a radical overhaul, throwing his full weight behind a Centre Party proposal to exempt tips entirely from taxes and social security contributions. The industry is currently grappling with a bureaucratic nightmare where the definition of taxable income is dangerously vague. Under current rules, voluntary tips are exempt, but if they form a "substantial part" of a salary, the taxman comes knockingâyet no one can define what "substantial" actually means.
This lack of clarity is paralyzing businesses. "Businesses are asking themselves when digital tips must be taxed. This is causing difficulties for many of our members," Imhof asserts. The hospitality sector argues that a full exemption is the only way to cut through the red tape. By removing the tax burden, employees would see an immediate boost in take-home pay, and employers would be relieved of complex social security calculations. For the Centre Party and Senator Beat Rieder, the solution is simple: legalize the tax-free status of tips to reflect the reality of modern service work, ending the uncertainty that currently plagues thousands of Swiss businesses.
