Rhine Temperature Could Rise 4°C by 2100

A groundbreaking study by Germany's Federal Institute of Hydrology (BfG) and Dutch research institute Deltares reveals alarming projections for the Rhine River's temperature evolution. The research indicates a potential temperature rise of up to 4.2°C by 2100, compared to the 1990-2010 reference period. By mid-century, the river is expected to warm by 1.1-1.8°C, highlighting the accelerating pace of climate change impacts on this crucial waterway.

The warming of the Rhine poses severe threats to its ecosystem. The study projects a dramatic shift in temperature patterns, with days below 10°C decreasing from 170 to 104 annually, while days above 21.5°C could surge from 32 to 106. This change could significantly impact aquatic life, as warmer water holds less oxygen. Experts warn of potential ecological damage when critical temperature thresholds are exceeded for extended periods.

The temperature rise threatens various economic activities along the Rhine. Industries dependent on river water for cooling systems may face operational constraints. The study indicates that higher temperatures will reduce available capacity for both existing and new cooling water consumers, potentially affecting power plants, manufacturing facilities, and other industrial operations along the Swiss sections of the Rhine.

The southern sections of the Rhine, particularly from Switzerland to Karlsruhe, are expected to be most severely affected by the temperature increases. This poses unique challenges for Swiss water management and environmental protection efforts. Switzerland, as an upstream nation, faces the responsibility of managing these changes while balancing economic needs with environmental preservation.

Looking ahead to 2100, the study projects that for approximately 50 days per year, average water temperatures could reach between 25-28°C. This scenario demands immediate attention and adaptation strategies. The International Commission for the Protection of the Rhine (ICPR) emphasizes the need for collaborative international efforts to address these challenges and implement protective measures for both the ecosystem and economic activities dependent on the river.
