E-Scooter Safety Crisis: Swiss Road Safety Group Issues Urgent Warning

Switzerland's leading road safety organization has issued an urgent warning about the growing dangers associated with electric scooters, as accident rates continue to climb across the nation. The Swiss Council for Accident Prevention (BFU) has revealed alarming statistics showing a significant rise in serious injuries and fatalities related to e-scooter use, prompting a nationwide safety campaign.

Between 2019 and 2023, Switzerland recorded 400 serious injuries and seven fatalities involving e-scooter riders. The demographic analysis reveals a striking gender disparity, with men accounting for 77% of serious accident victims. The BFU notes that e-scooters are predominantly used by young people and male riders, contributing to this disproportionate representation in accident statistics.

The BFU study identifies alcohol consumption as the leading cause of personal accidents, accounting for 39% of incidents. Inattention and distraction follow at 20%, while excessive speed contributes to 9% of accidents. The organization emphasizes that even minimal alcohol consumption significantly impairs riding ability. Failure to observe right-of-way rules has been identified as a major factor in collision-type accidents.

E-scooters in Switzerland are subject to the same regulations as slow-moving electric bicycles. These include mandatory use of lights even during daylight hours, obligation to use cycle paths and lanes where available, and restrictions on pavement use. The maximum allowed speed for approved e-scooters is 20 km/h, with the BFU emphasizing that higher speeds significantly increase both the risk of accidents and the severity of injuries.

The BFU strongly recommends complete abstinence from alcohol when using e-scooters. Additionally, riders are urged to wear protective gear, particularly helmets, given the high incidence of head and upper body injuries. The organization emphasizes the importance of following traffic rules, maintaining appropriate speeds, and staying alert to surrounding traffic conditions.
