Manhunt continues after fatal shooting at Aarau rave
A fatal shooting at a large Aarau rave left one woman dead and five people injured, with the suspect still being sought. The article should provide a verified investigation update, explain the police response and include the Italian government’s reaction to the victim’s nationality.

Gunfire Shatters Aarau Rave
One woman is dead and five people are injured after gunfire tore through a large rave in Aarau during the early hours of Sunday, 30 August 2026. The attacker, or attackers, remained at large as police continued a major search operation across the region.
The shooting happened shortly after 2:30am at the Schachen racecourse, beside the River Aare, where the seventh Aargau Rave had been running since Saturday afternoon. Organisers expected between 2,500 and 3,500 people. Witnesses told Swiss media that some partygoers initially mistook bursts of gunfire for fireworks before people ran for cover.
A 22-year-old woman died at the scene. Four men and another woman were taken to hospital with injuries ranging from minor to serious, according to the initial police account. All six victims were residents of Switzerland. The Italian government later said the dead woman was an Italian national and identified her as Maria Spinelli.
Police sealed off the racecourse, swimming pool and surrounding sports grounds. Authorities urged residents and eventgoers to avoid the area while investigators gathered evidence, interviewed witnesses and searched for possible escape routes. The swimming pool remained closed during the operation.
Police Trace Two Firing Positions
Investigators still cannot identify the shooter or establish a motive. Aargau police spokesperson Bernhard Graser said authorities had no reliable information about whether one person or several were involved, or whether they left the area on foot or in a vehicle.
Police commander Michael Leupold said investigators had found evidence of two different calibres, linked in his account to a pistol or submachine gun and an assault rifle. He also said shots appeared to have been fired from two locations, one at the rave itself and another beside a trailer park. Those findings have widened the scope of the inquiry, although police have not announced a confirmed sequence of events.
Leupold said investigators were examining three possible lines of inquiry: a terrorist attack, a mass killing, or a criminal act with an as-yet unknown motive. Police have not said that any of these scenarios is more likely than the others.
The crime scene remained closed as forensic teams worked and officers took statements from eyewitnesses. Authorities appealed for photographs and videos recorded at the event, asking witnesses to preserve material that could help establish where the gunfire began, how people moved through the venue and how the suspect escaped.
Manhunt Spreads Across Aargau
The manhunt extended well beyond Aarau. Police increased their presence outside the town as a precaution, with armed officers seen on motorways as far as 30 kilometres from the shooting scene. An army Super Puma helicopter was also reportedly deployed during the emergency response.
The operation involved cantonal police, emergency medical teams, firefighters and the canton’s disaster response unit. Officers searched the sealed area around the racecourse and nearby public facilities while continuing to assess whether the suspect remained in the region.
Graser said certain elements suggested the perpetrator or perpetrators might already have left the area. Police nevertheless maintained a significant presence so they could act if the suspect was still nearby. Authorities have not released a description of a suspect, vehicle or weapon beyond the preliminary forensic findings.
The investigation also has a cross-border dimension. Germany’s Freiburg police are cooperating with Swiss authorities, reflecting the proximity of the German border to northern Aargau. Police have asked anyone with relevant recordings or photographs to contact them and have warned the public not to approach the crime scene or interfere with evidence.
The scale of the response reflects the uncertainty surrounding the case. Until investigators establish a motive and identify those responsible, authorities cannot determine whether the shooting was directed at particular individuals or aimed at the wider crowd.
