Swiss-wide Plastic Recycling System Launches
New nationwide plastic packaging and drinks carton recycling system begins rollout across Swiss municipalities

Launch of National Initiative
Switzerland has embarked on an ambitious journey to revolutionize its plastic recycling system with the launch of a nationwide plastic packaging and drinks carton recycling initiative. The program, spearheaded by Recypac, has initially rolled out in five municipalities in German-speaking Switzerland: Bern, Dietikon, Greifensee, Oetwil an der Limmat, and Schlieren. This marks a significant step forward in Switzerland's commitment to environmental sustainability and waste management.
How the System Works
The new recycling system introduces a user-friendly approach to plastic waste collection. Consumers can purchase specially designed collection bags, known as Recybags, available in four sizes ranging from 17 to 110 liters, priced between CHF1 and CHF4. These bags can be used to collect plastic packaging and drinks cartons at home, with no requirement for washing the materials. The filled bags can be returned to participating retailers, including Coop and Migros, as well as designated municipal collection points. Currently, the collected plastic is processed in neighboring countries, with plans to integrate the recycled materials back into Swiss industry and food packaging production.
Industry Collaboration
The initiative represents an unprecedented collaboration among Swiss retailers, food producers, and packaging manufacturers. Major players including Aldi Suisse, Coop, Denner, Emmi, Lidl Switzerland, Migros, Nestlé, Unilever, and Valora have joined forces to support this non-profit organization. This cooperative approach ensures a standardized and efficient recycling system across the country. As noted by Christopher Rohrer from Migros, this nationally standardized solution brings important efficiency gains and better serves consumer interests, replacing the previous fragmented approach where individual retailers operated separate collection systems.
Environmental Impact and Goals
The initiative addresses a critical environmental challenge in Switzerland, where currently only 3% of plastic packaging is recycled. The program has set ambitious targets, aiming to achieve a 55% recycling rate for plastic packaging and 70% for beverage cartons by 2030. These goals align with Switzerland's broader environmental objectives and demonstrate the country's commitment to reducing plastic waste and promoting circular economy principles. The system is designed to handle various types of plastic packaging, from yogurt pots to shampoo bottles, significantly expanding the scope of recyclable materials.
Future Expansion Plans
The initiative is set for rapid expansion across Switzerland in the coming weeks and months. While Recypac currently requires approval from each municipality to offer the collection system, the organization is actively working to extend its services nationwide. Future plans include developing domestic recycling capabilities and establishing a complete circular economy for plastic packaging in Switzerland. This expansion will make Switzerland one of the leading European nations in comprehensive plastic recycling infrastructure.
