Toblerone Reclaims Swiss Identity with Major Bern Investment

In a significant move to reinforce its Swiss heritage, Toblerone has announced a substantial CHF65 million ($80 million) investment in its Bern-Brünnen factory. This strategic decision comes after the controversial partial relocation of production to Slovakia in 2023, which had impacted the brand's ability to use the 'Swiss made' designation. The investment demonstrates Mondelēz International's commitment to maintaining Toblerone's strong Swiss connection, with the Bern facility currently producing 90% of all Toblerone products globally.

In a strategic rebranding effort, Toblerone is introducing the Swiss cross on its packaging, replacing the iconic Matterhorn logo. This change follows regulatory requirements that restricted the use of Swiss symbols after partial production moved to Slovakia. According to Anna van Riesen, country manager at Mondelēz International, 'We opted for the Swiss cross because it is recognised around the world as a symbol of origin and solidarity with Switzerland.' This move represents a careful balance between maintaining the brand's Swiss heritage while adapting to new production realities.

The CHF65 million investment in the Bern-Brünnen facility will significantly enhance production capabilities. Currently manufacturing an impressive 4 million Toblerone products daily, the factory will undergo comprehensive modernization. Plans include installing a new production line scheduled for autumn operation, expanding chocolate and nougat production facilities, and upgrading existing infrastructure. This expansion reinforces the facility's position as a crucial hub in Mondelēz's European chocolate network.
