Ticino reports 20% surge in youth crime
Southern Swiss canton records alarming increase in juvenile offenses, including serious crimes, with authorities noting rise in digital-related violations.

Sharp Rise in Youth Crime
The Italian-speaking canton of Ticino has reported an alarming 24% increase in youth crime during 2024, with authorities documenting 362 offences committed by minors. This significant surge has raised concerns among law enforcement and social services. The cantonal police opened 486 investigations throughout the year, marking an increase from the 478 cases in the previous year. While 227 cases were determined to have no criminally relevant elements, the overall trend shows a concerning uptick in juvenile delinquency.
Types of Offences
The spectrum of youth offences in Ticino has broadened to include serious crimes. The cantonal police reported cases ranging from attempted intentional homicides to fights and assaults. There has been a notable increase in thefts, robberies, and cases of grievous bodily harm. Particularly concerning are incidents involving violence or threats against authorities and officials. The rise in wilful arson and sexual harassment cases has added another layer of complexity to the youth crime landscape.
Vigilante Actions
One of the most challenging aspects of 2024 was the emergence of vigilante groups, primarily composed of minors. These groups engaged in what they termed 'punishment operations,' targeting individuals they suspected of being pedophiles. This concerning trend led to a major police operation resulting in the identification and arrest of approximately 30 young people during October and November. These vigilante actions represent a dangerous form of youth taking the law into their own hands.
Digital Crime Concerns
The digital dimension of youth crime has become increasingly prominent, with pornography offences showing a marked increase. In 2024, authorities recorded 84 pornography-related cases, up from 66 in the previous year. Notably, 60 of these cases were identified through national and international internet surveillance operations, highlighting the growing challenge of cybercrime among young people.
Response and Measures
In response to the rising youth crime rates, Ticino authorities have intensified their investigative efforts and surveillance operations. The successful intervention in the vigilante cases demonstrates the police's commitment to addressing youth crime promptly. The increase in digital-related offences has led to enhanced cooperation between national and international law enforcement agencies, particularly in monitoring online activities. The canton is working to develop comprehensive strategies that combine law enforcement with preventive measures and youth support services.
