The data is unequivocal: in too many regions, the forest floor remains barren of new life, or worse, is populated by species destined to fail in a rapidly heating climate.
This is not merely a biological concern; it is a threat to national safety. Overmature forests with stagnant growth lose their ability to protect mountain communities from avalanches and landslides. The North-South Divide
Geography dictates destiny in the Swiss woods. While the northern side of the Alps has seen a surge in young tree numbers—an ironic gift from the devastation of winter storms Vivian and Lothar, which cleared space for new life—the situation in the Central and Southern Alps is dire. Here, regeneration rates have plummeted.
In these regions, conifers dominate a landscape that is growing dangerously old. The dense canopies of these overmature forests block essential sunlight, starving potential saplings before they can thrive. Compounding this struggle is a relentless biological pressure: wild ungulates. High populations of deer and chamois are browsing young shoots into oblivion, effectively eating the future of the forest before it can stand tall. This stark regional disparity highlights a complex battle where nature is fighting against itself, and without intervention, the Central Alps risk becoming a museum of dying giants rather than a nursery for the future.
The Wrong Trees for a Warmer World
Even where trees are growing, they may be the wrong ones. The WSL warns of a critical mismatch between current species and future climates. In the lowlands, the economically vital spruce is already buckling under the pressure of recurring droughts. It is a species built for a Switzerland that no longer exists.
Climate change is outpacing nature's ability to adapt. Extreme events—from severe drought to bark beetle infestations—are exposing the fragility of these monocultures. In the mountains, the stakes are even higher. As stands age without replacement, their protective capacity against natural hazards diminishes. We are facing a scenario where the "protective forest"—a cornerstone of Swiss Alpine safety—becomes a liability. The urgent challenge now is not just to grow trees, but to grow the right trees that can withstand the hotter, drier future that models predict is inevitable.
Engineering the Forest of Tomorrow
Science is stepping in where nature falters. The WSL is currently spearheading massive experimental initiatives, including test plantings of over 55,000 young trees, to identify the survivors of the next century. Initial results are promising and point toward a radical shift in forestry management.
Experiments conducted since 2021 reveal that species adapted to higher temperatures can already thrive at higher altitudes today. Most notably, the Douglas fir—a species native to North America—has emerged as a top contender, thriving on shallow soils that are prone to drying out. This suggests that the future of Swiss forests may rely on assisted migration and the introduction of non-native, resilient species. The mandate is clear: we must actively curate our landscapes. Promoting climate-fit species is no longer an option; it is the primary task for the survival of the Swiss ecosystem.
