MSF Warns of Darfur Crisis: Swiss NGO Calls for Action

Geneva-based Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has raised an urgent alarm over the deteriorating situation in North Darfur, warning of imminent mass atrocities in El-Fasher. The humanitarian organization has documented systematic violations and ethnic targeting between May 2024 and May 2025, painting a grave picture of the ongoing crisis. The situation has reached a critical point with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) threatening an assault on the town.

MSF's report details a horrifying pattern of violations including looting, mass executions, sexual violence, and the use of hunger as a weapon of war. The RSF and their allies have been specifically identified as perpetrators of ethnic targeting. The Sudanese army stands accused of indiscriminate bombing of civilians in areas where RSF presence was not confirmed. These actions potentially constitute crimes against humanity, according to the UN Fact-Finding Mission.

The humanitarian toll is staggering, with nearly 13 million people displaced, including over 4 million refugees. A devastating 25 million people face serious starvation, while 40% of the population requires urgent health assistance. Children are dying of malnutrition due to the siege of El-Fasher, and recent attacks on displaced persons' camps have resulted in hundreds of casualties.

The international community's response has been criticized as insufficient by MSF, which condemns the perceived 'indifference' to the situation. UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, has repeatedly warned of the catastrophic consequences of continued attacks. The Fact-Finding Mission has begun working with several courts and has compiled a list of those presumed responsible for atrocities.
