Zander Named Switzerland's Fish of the Year 2025
Swiss Fishing Federation highlights conservation needs as popular predatory fish faces declining populations

Swiss Fishing Federation's 2025 Selection
The Swiss Fishing Federation (FSP) has designated the zander (Sander lucioperca) as Switzerland's Fish of the Year 2025, highlighting both its significance in Swiss waters and the urgent need for its conservation. This prestigious annual selection aims to draw public attention to the importance of protecting native fish species and their habitats. The announcement comes as part of the Federation's ongoing efforts to promote sustainable fishing practices and aquatic ecosystem preservation in Switzerland.
Zander: Switzerland's Prized Predator
The zander has earned its reputation as one of Switzerland's most remarkable aquatic predators. Described by the Swiss Fishing Federation as 'magnificent as a mythical creature and merciless as a predatory knight,' this fish species demonstrates remarkable hunting abilities, often traveling in groups similar to wolf packs. Its popularity extends beyond its ecological role, being highly valued both by recreational anglers and in Swiss cuisine. The species' adaptability has proven crucial for its survival in various aquatic environments, making it one of the few fish species capable of maintaining self-sustaining populations.
Conservation Challenges and Solutions
Despite its adaptability, the zander faces significant challenges in Swiss waters. Current population levels are insufficient to meet local demand, with only about ten tonnes caught annually in Swiss waters. This shortage necessitates reliance on imports and aquaculture to satisfy market demands. FSP Managing Director David Bittner emphasizes the need for sustainable management: 'We have to use it sustainably, which is why we need conservation regulations.' The Federation's decision to name zander as Fish of the Year 2025 is part of a broader strategy to raise awareness about the importance of natural aquatic habitats and to promote the recovery of native fish populations.
Distribution and Habitat in Switzerland
In Switzerland, significant zander populations can be found across various water bodies, including Lakes Murten, Gruyère, Schiffenen, Sihl, Constance, and Lugano. The species has also established itself in numerous rivers, dam reservoirs, and canals throughout the central Plateau region. This widespread distribution demonstrates the zander's adaptability to different aquatic environments, though maintaining healthy population levels remains a challenge. The species' presence in these diverse water systems makes it an important indicator of ecosystem health and a key target for conservation efforts.
