Switzerland and EFTA partners sign modernized free trade agreement with Ukraine in Kyiv, aimed at facilitating exports and supporting Ukraine's economic recovery.

"Modernising the free trade agreement with Ukraine has been a priority for Switzerland"
"A further step to support Ukraine as much as possible in the current geopolitical context"
The European Free Trade Association (EFTA) and Ukraine have marked a significant milestone with the signing of an updated free trade agreement in Kyiv. Swiss government delegate Jacques Gerber represented Switzerland at this crucial event, joining representatives from other EFTA member states - Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway. The modernized agreement addresses previous shortcomings and introduces comprehensive trade liberalization measures, particularly benefiting Swiss exporters in the agricultural sector. A notable feature is the complete liberalization of industrial products trade upon the agreement's implementation.
The bilateral trade relationship between Switzerland and Ukraine has shown remarkable resilience and growth since the original FTA's implementation in 2012. Prior to the Russian invasion in 2022, trade volumes had reached an impressive CHF800 million (approximately $933 million) in 2021. The updated agreement builds upon this foundation, reflecting Switzerland's commitment to supporting Ukraine's economic recovery while enhancing bilateral trade opportunities. The modernization of the agreement has been identified as a strategic priority for Switzerland, demonstrating the country's dedication to strengthening economic ties with Ukraine despite the challenging geopolitical environment.
The modernized agreement is expected to significantly boost bilateral economic relations. Swiss exporters will benefit from enhanced market access, particularly in the agricultural sector where new concessions have been secured. The full liberalization of industrial products trade represents a major step forward in economic cooperation. This agreement aligns with Switzerland's successful free trade policy and its strategy to strengthen economic competitiveness. The timing is particularly significant as it provides crucial support for Ukraine's economic recovery while reinforcing Switzerland's position as a reliable trading partner.
The updated agreement comes at a critical time in international trade relations. While Switzerland continues to expand its free trade network, including recent progress with India and other partners, it faces challenges in other areas. Notably, the United States has announced significant tariffs of 31% on Swiss imported goods, prompting diplomatic engagement to protect Swiss interests. This context underscores the importance of diversifying trade relationships and strengthening ties with partners like Ukraine. The agreement also demonstrates Switzerland's commitment to supporting Ukraine's economic resilience in the face of ongoing geopolitical challenges.
