Federal Railways' six-month pilot program shows significant reduction in violence against officers

"The Federal Railways has drawn a positive interim conclusion on the use of bodycams by the transport police"
The Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) has reported a significant breakthrough in officer safety following the implementation of body-worn cameras for its transport police force. A comprehensive six-month pilot program has revealed a remarkable 25% reduction in assaults against officers, marking a major success for the initiative launched in September 2024.
The bodycam program, initiated by Swiss Federal Railways in September 2024, has completed its first six-month evaluation phase. The assessment compared incident data with the same period from the previous year, providing clear metrics for the program's effectiveness. The cameras are now standard equipment for officers during daily presence and intervention services, serving multiple purposes including deterrence, de-escalation, and evidence collection.
The most striking outcome of the bodycam implementation has been its impact on officer safety and conflict de-escalation. The 25% reduction in assaults demonstrates the camera's effectiveness as a deterrent. Out of 331 total activations, 224 recordings were terminated early as situations de-escalated immediately after camera activation, highlighting the technology's role in preventing potential confrontations.
The bodycam program has also proven valuable for evidence collection, with 107 recordings being preserved for evidentiary purposes during the six-month pilot. This demonstrates the dual benefit of the technology: not only does it prevent incidents, but it also provides crucial documentation when enforcement actions are necessary. The recorded evidence strengthens the legal process and ensures accountability for all parties involved.
While the initial results are promising, the Swiss Federal Railways plans to conduct a final evaluation after a full year of implementation. The success of the six-month pilot suggests that bodycams could become a permanent fixture in Swiss transport policing, potentially setting a precedent for other public safety organizations across Switzerland. The program's success in reducing assaults and de-escalating conflicts may influence similar initiatives in other sectors of public transportation and law enforcement.
