ETHZ spin-off RIVR partners with Just Eat Takeaway for pioneering robotic delivery trial in Zurich, featuring innovative four-limbed robots capable of navigating urban environments and climbing stairs.

"Together with Just Eat Takeaway.com we are working on a new generation of robotic deliveries, starting in Switzerland"
In a groundbreaking development for the food delivery industry, Swiss robotics company RIVR, a spin-off from the prestigious ETH Zurich (ETHZ), has partnered with global food delivery giant Just Eat Takeaway to revolutionize meal delivery services. This collaboration marks a significant milestone in Switzerland's growing reputation as a global hub for robotics innovation.
The RIVR robots represent a leap forward in delivery automation technology. Equipped with four advanced limbs, these robots can accomplish what many previous delivery automatons couldn't - climbing stairs while maintaining stability. Operating at speeds up to 15 km/h, they incorporate sophisticated AI systems for navigating complex urban environments. The robots are designed to operate in various weather conditions, including rain, snow, and strong winds, making them particularly suitable for Switzerland's diverse climate.
The pilot program is launching with Zekis World restaurant in Zurich's Oerlikon district. The initial 30-day phase will feature close monitoring of the robots' performance and safety protocols. Following this, operations will transition to remote monitoring from a dedicated control center. The robots are equipped with visibility features including lights and flags to ensure safe interaction with pedestrians and traffic.
RIVR's ambitions extend beyond Switzerland, with plans to deploy their robots in other European cities by the end of the year. The company is also exploring potential applications in retail shops and convenience stores, signaling a broader transformation in local delivery services. This Swiss-led innovation could potentially reshape the future of urban logistics while reinforcing Switzerland's position as a leader in robotics technology.
