The company has installed the world's first removable solar panel system between train tracks in Buttes, canton Neuchâtel, marking a significant milestone in sustainable infrastructure development.

The inception of this innovative project can be traced back to 2020, when Joseph Scuderi had his eureka moment while waiting for a train in Renens. What began as a simple observation of unused space between railroad tracks has evolved into a CHF585,000 venture, supported by the Swiss Agency for Innovation Promotion (Innosuisse) and various industry partners. This journey from concept to implementation exemplifies the Swiss commitment to turning innovative ideas into practical solutions.

The Buttes installation showcases 48 solar panels ingeniously placed on railroad sleepers. What sets this system apart is its unique removable design, allowing for routine track maintenance while maintaining operational efficiency. The installation process, whether manual or mechanical, is facilitated by Swiss track maintenance company Scheuchzer, capable of installing or removing 1,000 square meters of panels within hours. The system includes innovative features such as a cylindrical brush attachment for trains to maintain panel cleanliness.

The pilot installation in Buttes is projected to generate 16,000 kilowatt-hours annually, sufficient to power 4-6 households. When scaled to Switzerland's entire 5,320-kilometer rail network, the potential reaches an impressive 1 billion kWh per year, equivalent to powering 300,000 households or 2% of Switzerland's electricity consumption. This innovation aligns perfectly with Switzerland's ambitious renewable energy goals, contributing to the nation's target of increasing solar energy production sevenfold by 2035.
