"There are repeated calls for the prevention of sexual assault"
In a pioneering move for Switzerland's religious institutions, the Catholic Church in the canton of Zurich has launched a groundbreaking mental health initiative. The program, which began in September 2025, marks the first of its kind in the country, offering free and anonymous counseling services specifically designed for church employees. This innovative approach demonstrates the Church's commitment to addressing both mental health support and sexual abuse prevention within its ranks.
The initiative features a comprehensive approach to mental and sexual health support. Operating through the large outpatient centre in Oerlikon, the service ensures complete anonymity for church employees seeking assistance. The program particularly emphasizes prevention strategies, focusing on potential risk factors and early intervention. This low-threshold approach removes traditional barriers to accessing mental health support, making it more accessible to church staff at all levels.
The Catholic Church in Zurich has partnered with the prestigious Psychiatric University Hospital Zurich to ensure the highest standard of professional care. This collaboration brings together religious sensitivity and clinical expertise, with the Church financing the program while medical professionals provide the necessary mental health services. The partnership represents a significant step forward in addressing both spiritual and psychological well-being within the religious community.
The initiative is set for an initial three-year run, after which a comprehensive evaluation will determine its future. The Synodal Council will review a detailed report to decide whether to continue, modify, or conclude the program. This pilot project could serve as a model for other Swiss cantons and religious institutions, potentially transforming how religious organizations approach mental health support and abuse prevention throughout Switzerland.
