Swiss Asylum Rejections Jump 18.5% in 2024

Switzerland witnessed a significant increase in the departure of rejected asylum seekers during 2024, with numbers rising by 18.5% compared to the previous year. According to the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM), a total of 7,205 individuals left the country, up from 6,077 in 2023. This marked increase reflects Switzerland's strengthened enforcement of asylum decisions and border management policies.

The departures in 2024 were categorized into two main types: voluntary departures and escorted returns. Of the total 7,205 departures, 2,467 (34.2%) individuals left independently, while 4,738 (65.8%) were returned under escort to either their country of origin, a third country, or a Dublin state. Despite challenges with Italian cooperation, Dublin transfers showed a notable increase of 23.3%, reaching 2,491 cases.

The data revealed significant variations in departure patterns across nationalities. Among voluntary departures, Turkish nationals formed the largest group with 667 departures, showing a dramatic 96.1% increase from 2023. Algerian citizens represented the second-largest group with 317 departures, though showing a 9.4% decrease. In terms of escorted returns, Algerians topped the list with 742 cases (+37.4%), followed by Moroccans (416, +32.5%) and Afghans (382, +6.4%).

A notable development in 2024 was the voluntary return of 6,059 Ukrainian protection status S holders to their homeland. This figure represents a significant decrease from the 10,978 returns recorded in 2023. When combined with regular asylum seeker departures, the total number of individuals who left Switzerland in 2024 reached 13,264. This trend reflects the evolving situation in Ukraine and changing patterns in temporary protection needs.

Despite the increased number of departures, the SEM has successfully maintained stability in pending cases. By the end of 2024, 4,323 individuals required to leave Switzerland remained in the country, only slightly higher than the 4,162 recorded at the end of 2023. This demonstrates the effectiveness of Switzerland's asylum management system, even as it faces ongoing challenges with international cooperation and changing migration patterns. The situation continues to require careful monitoring and adaptive policy responses.
