"It's so important in uncertain times to come together, to meet and talk to each other rather than isolate ourselves. And it is this vision of an open and generous culture that the first edition of the Swiss Cultural Capital in La Chaux-de-fonds embodies"
"The trend is positive"
In a landmark decision for Swiss cultural history, La Chaux-de-Fonds has been designated as Switzerland's first-ever Capital of Culture for the year 2027. This pioneering initiative, supported by the Federal Office of Culture, marks a significant milestone in the nation's approach to celebrating and promoting its rich cultural heritage. The designation recognizes La Chaux-de-Fonds's unique position in Swiss cultural landscape, building upon its existing UNESCO World Heritage status for its watchmaking heritage.
The ambitious cultural initiative has received substantial financial backing, with the Federal Office of Culture committing CHF2 million to the project. The total budget is set at CHF18.5 million, of which CHF14.5 million has already been secured. The funding structure demonstrates strong multi-stakeholder support, with contributions from various sources including CHF2.5 million each from the city of La Chaux-de-Fonds and canton Neuchâtel, CHF2.5 million from Loterie romande, and CHF5 million from private sponsors. The remaining funding is expected to come from additional private sector support.
The project embodies a broad and inclusive vision of culture, particularly relevant in Switzerland's multilingual and multicultural context. Culture Office Director Carine Bachmann emphasizes the importance of cultural exchange and community connection, especially in challenging times. The initiative aims to attract one million visitors through a comprehensive year-long program of events and activities. This ambitious goal reflects the project's potential to significantly boost cultural tourism and regional development while promoting Switzerland's cultural diversity and fostering inter-regional dialogue.
While La Chaux-de-Fonds leads the way as the inaugural Swiss Capital of Culture, the initiative sets the stage for future cultural capitals in 2030 and 2033. The Federal Office of Culture plans to evaluate this first experience to inform future implementations. Though funding for subsequent cultural capitals is not yet confirmed, the success of La Chaux-de-Fonds's program will likely influence the framework for future designations. This pioneering project represents a significant step in Switzerland's cultural policy, potentially establishing a new tradition in celebrating and promoting regional cultural excellence.
