Basel-City and Basel-Land implement emergency measures including lawn watering bans to combat invasive Japanese beetles, marking first sightings this year.

"The current ban on watering lawns in the defined infestation area is intended to make the green areas as unattractive as possible for the beetles to lay their eggs"
In an unprecedented move, the Swiss cantons of Basel-City and Basel-Land have implemented emergency water restrictions following the first sightings of Japanese beetles this year. The authorities have announced a comprehensive ban on lawn watering that will remain in effect until the end of September 2025. This measure specifically targets green areas that could attract these invasive pests, while still allowing residents to water their flower beds and vegetable gardens.
The Japanese beetles have been detected in several key locations across the Basel region. Primary sightings occurred in the Brüglinger Ebene in Münchenstein, following patterns similar to last year's infestation. Additional beetles have been discovered in Basel's Rosenfeldpark and the Wenkenpark in Riehen. The center of infestation encompasses areas in Basel, Muttenz, Riehen, Münchenstein, and Birsfelden, creating a significant zone requiring careful monitoring and control measures.
Beyond water restrictions, authorities have implemented a comprehensive containment strategy. A strict ban on transporting green waste and soil from infested areas has been established. However, sports facilities have received special consideration, with operators able to request exemptions from the cantonal plant protection service. These facilities are permitted to use nematodes for Japanese beetle control. Regular municipal green waste collection continues unaffected, though residents are urged to report any suspected beetle sightings to authorities immediately.
The emergency measures have significant implications for local communities in the Basel region. While necessary for pest control, the restrictions affect daily activities from garden maintenance to waste management. Residents must adapt their gardening practices, particularly concerning lawn care and plant waste disposal. The measures highlight the delicate balance between maintaining public spaces and controlling invasive species, with authorities working to minimize disruption while ensuring effective pest management.
