"If the complex machines are not properly cared for, they can become unhygienic"
In a concerning development for Swiss coffee enthusiasts, the Zurich Cantonal Laboratory has uncovered alarming levels of bacterial contamination in commercial coffee machines. The investigation, conducted last year, revealed that one in four milk-based drinks from coffee machines contained dangerous levels of intestinal bacteria, raising significant public health concerns across Switzerland.
The comprehensive study analyzed 15 samples from various coffee machines, focusing particularly on milk-based beverages. Four samples exceeded acceptable guideline values for Enterobacteria, while one additional sample showed elevated levels of aerobic mesophilic bacteria. These findings prompted immediate action from health authorities, with follow-up inspections confirming improved conditions after intervention.
The presence of Enterobacteria, commonly found in human and animal intestines, poses significant health risks to consumers. These bacteria can cause various gastrointestinal issues, including diarrhea. The discovery is particularly concerning given that coffee machines typically use pasteurized or UHT-treated milk, which should be nearly germ-free upon entry into the machine. The contamination appears to occur within the machines themselves, where bacteria colonize milk residues.
Following these findings, Swiss health authorities have implemented stricter monitoring protocols for commercial coffee machines. Machine operators have been mandated to enhance their cleaning and maintenance procedures. The Zurich Cantonal Laboratory emphasizes the importance of regular cleaning and proper maintenance of coffee machines, particularly focusing on milk delivery systems. Random follow-up checks have shown positive results, with no further guideline violations detected after implementing these measures.
