Acclaimed Haitian filmmaker Raoul Peck has been named the guest of honor at the 56th edition of Visions du Réel, Switzerland's premier documentary film festival. The event, held in Nyon from April 4 to 13, will celebrate Peck's influential career, which is noted for its focus on emancipatory struggles and telling stories from the perspective of dominated peoples. The announcement underscores the festival's commitment to showcasing powerful, politically engaged documentary cinema.
As part of the tribute, Raoul Peck will lead a masterclass, offering attendees a unique insight into his creative process and cinematic philosophy. The festival will also feature a retrospective of his documentary work. Among the films to be screened is his latest feature, Ernest Cole: Lost and Found, which premiered at a Special Screening in Cannes. Additionally, the festival will present his award-winning four-part HBO series, Exterminate All The Brutes. This special program is organized in collaboration with the Cinémathèque suisse and the ECAL film department, highlighting a significant partnership within the Swiss cultural scene.
Raoul Peck's filmography is a powerful examination of political figures, writers, and the complex history of colonialism. His 1990 film Lumumba: Death of a Prophet is a seminal work exploring the life of the Congolese leader. However, he is perhaps best known for the 2016 documentary I Am Not Your Negro, which was nominated for an Academy Award and won both a Bafta and a César. The film, based on the unfinished manuscript of James Baldwin, is a profound exploration of racism in the United States. His HBO series Exterminate All The Brutes further cemented his reputation, winning a Peabody Award in 2022 for its unflinching journey through the history of colonialism.
Born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, in 1953, Raoul Peck's life has been as eventful as his films. As a child, he fled the Duvalier dictatorship with his parents, finding refuge in the newly independent Congo. His formative years were spent across continents, from schools in Brooklyn, USA, to Orleans, France. After training as an engineer and economist, he transitioned to journalism and photography before studying cinema in the highly politicized city of Berlin in the 1970s. His deep engagement with politics and culture culminated in his appointment as Haiti's Minister of Culture from 1995 to 1997. His global perspective is further reflected in his service as a jury member at major film festivals like Cannes, the Berlinale, and Sundance.
The celebration of Raoul Peck is a central pillar of the upcoming 56th Visions du Réel festival. From its base in Nyon, the festival continues to be a crucial platform for international documentary filmmaking. The full festival programme is eagerly anticipated and will be officially unveiled on March 12. The selection of Peck as guest of honor signals a festival edition that promises to be both thought-provoking and deeply engaged with the pressing social and political issues of our time.
