The canton of Valais is reeling from a profound tragedy as two of its own have fallen in the line of duty to the mountain's fury. In a devastating blow to the local community, two cantonal police officers, aged 41 and 42, were killed while ski touring in the Chamoson area. The incident occurred on the eastern flank of the Pointe de Chemo at an altitude of 2,500 meters, where a massive slab of snow broke loose, sweeping the officers away with terrifying force.
Despite a rapid and robust response involving two Air-Glaciers helicopters and an Air Zermatt aircraft, the outcome was grim. One officer died at the scene, while his colleague succumbed to his injuries after being airlifted to Inselspital Bern. This loss strikes at the heart of the region's safety infrastructure. These were not novices; they were professionals operating in their home terrain, yet even their expertise could not shield them from the unpredictable violence of the avalanche. A 53-year-old woman was also injured, surviving the slide that has left the Valais police force in deep mourning.
