Eurostar Announces Direct London-Geneva Route Plans

Eurostar has announced ambitious plans to establish a direct train service connecting London and Geneva, marking the first-ever direct rail link between the United Kingdom and Switzerland. The railway company, a subsidiary of France's SNCF, aims to launch the service by the early 2030s, heralding a new chapter in cross-continental travel and strengthening ties between the two nations.

The London-Geneva route is part of a broader expansion strategy for Eurostar, which also includes a direct connection to Frankfurt. To facilitate this growth, the company plans to purchase up to 50 new high-speed trains by 2030, with the goal of increasing its annual passenger count to 30 million. This move comes as a response to surging demand for sustainable and convenient travel options across Europe. As Eurostar's Director General, Gwendoline Cazenave, stated, "Demand for train travel in Europe is strong and customers want to travel further by train than ever before."

Establishing new direct routes from the UK to mainland Europe presents unique challenges, primarily due to the UK's position outside the Schengen Area. This necessitates the creation of dedicated infrastructure for security and passport controls at departure stations, similar to those at airports. However, a significant step forward was taken in May, when Swiss Transport Minister Albert Rösti and his British counterpart, Heidi Alexander, signed a declaration of intent, signaling strong political will to overcome these logistical hurdles.

From a Swiss standpoint, the new Eurostar link is a welcome development that aligns with the country's own efforts to enhance international rail connectivity. The Swiss Federal Railways has already announced its intention to procure up to 40 new high-speed trains for deployment on international routes during the 2030s. The potential for a direct link to London has been a long-held aspiration, with studies indicating a potential market of one million travelers per year between London and Geneva. This project promises to significantly boost tourism and business travel, offering a more sustainable alternative to air travel.
