Basel EuroAirport Unveils Major Expansion Plans

Basel EuroAirport has unveiled ambitious plans to double its terminal capacity by 2030, marking a significant milestone in Swiss aviation infrastructure development. The announcement comes as the airport experiences record-breaking passenger numbers, with nearly 9 million travelers passing through its terminals in 2024, representing the second-best performance in its 75-year history.

The expansion project represents a substantial investment of 125 million Swiss francs. The development plan includes renovating the existing 15,000-square-metre terminal and constructing a new building of equivalent size. This strategic enhancement aims to improve service quality and accommodate the growing passenger numbers, with projections indicating passenger traffic will reach 9.2 million in 2025.

EuroAirport Basel holds a distinctive position among Swiss airports due to its truly international character. Located in Saint-Louis, France, but serving Switzerland's Basel, Germany's Freiburg, and France's Mulhouse, the airport operates under three different codes: BSL (Swiss), MLH (French), and EAP (International). Unlike other Swiss airports, EuroAirport is jointly operated by France and Switzerland, exemplifying successful cross-border cooperation in aviation infrastructure.

The airport serves as a crucial hub for various international carriers, including Lufthansa, Austrian, British Airways, Air France, Turkish Airlines, and KLM. Low-cost carriers dominate the airport's operations, with EasyJet leading the way, followed by RyanAir and WizzAir. The airport connects to over 90 destinations, offering flights to popular locations across Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East, including Turkey, Egypt, Tunisia, Algeria, Dubai, Israel, and Morocco.

The expansion project positions EuroAirport Basel as a viable alternative to Zurich Airport for short and medium-haul flights, though airport management emphasizes they're not in direct competition. The development reflects the region's growing importance as a transportation hub and demonstrates Switzerland's commitment to maintaining world-class aviation infrastructure. This expansion will significantly enhance the airport's capacity to serve the trinational region while maintaining its unique international character.
