Vaud Launches Pioneering Radicalisation Prevention Unit

The Swiss canton of Vaud has taken a significant step forward in addressing youth radicalization by announcing the creation of a specialized Radicalisation Prevention Unit (UPRAD). This pioneering initiative represents Switzerland's proactive approach to tackling emerging social challenges, particularly those affecting young people through digital platforms.

The establishment of UPRAD follows a successful pilot project launched in 2018 focused on disengagement and reintegration. The pilot program demonstrated significant results, managing 300 cases and providing valuable insights into the nature and scope of radicalization challenges. State councillor Vassilis Venizelos emphasized the growing complexity of radicalization, noting its increasing impact on younger populations, particularly through social media platforms.

Under the leadership of Serge Terribilini, current Prefect of Lausanne, UPRAD is scheduled to become operational by 2026. The unit will build upon the foundations laid by the pilot project, incorporating lessons learned and best practices. The initiative falls under the Department of the Environment, Youth and Security (DJES), ensuring a comprehensive approach to prevention and intervention.

UPRAD's primary objective is to prevent family, school, and professional breakdowns that could lead to ideologically motivated violence. The unit will focus on early intervention and support, particularly in digital spaces where young people are most vulnerable. Building on the success of the pilot program's 300 case interventions, UPRAD aims to establish a more comprehensive and systematic approach to addressing radicalization risks in the canton.
