Switzerland Sets New Startup Record with 53,000 Companies in 2024

Switzerland's entrepreneurial landscape reached new heights in 2024, with an unprecedented 53,000 new startup registrations, marking a significant 2.6% increase from the previous year. This remarkable achievement, reported by the Institut für Jungunternehmen (IFJ), reinforces Switzerland's position as a premier destination for business innovation and entrepreneurship. The growth reflects both the country's robust economic environment and its continuing appeal to entrepreneurs seeking to establish new ventures.

The startup growth showed notable regional variations across Switzerland. Southwestern Switzerland emerged as the leader with an impressive 6.3% growth rate, followed by strong performances in the central plateau region (+3.4%) and southern Ticino (+3%). Central Switzerland (+2%), Zurich (+1.2%), and eastern Switzerland (+1.1%) maintained positive growth trajectories. However, northwestern Switzerland experienced a slight decline of 1%, being the only region to record negative growth. This diverse regional performance highlights the country's decentralized economic development pattern.

The startup ecosystem showed diverse preferences in both sectors and legal structures. Skilled trades led the way with over 5,500 new establishments, followed closely by consulting (5,200) and real estate (4,800) sectors. In terms of legal entities, sole proprietorships showed the strongest growth at 3.4%, while public limited companies grew by 2.4%. Limited liability companies, despite a more modest 1.5% growth, remained the most popular choice with over 20,000 new registrations, demonstrating Swiss entrepreneurs' preference for this flexible business structure.

Switzerland's continued startup growth is supported by a robust ecosystem of government and private sector initiatives. As noted by IFJ co-director Simon May, this trend reflects 'the desire of many for professional fulfillment and independence.' The comprehensive support services available to entrepreneurs, combined with Switzerland's stable economic environment, suggest a promising outlook for continued startup growth.
