Swiss Employment Shows Resilience Despite Market Challenges

Switzerland's labor market demonstrated remarkable resilience in the fourth quarter of 2024, with total employment rising by 0.9% year-on-year. The Federal Statistical Office (FSO) reports that Swiss companies now account for 5.5 million jobs, marking an increase of 48,300 positions compared to the previous year. This growth reflects the Swiss economy's ability to maintain stability despite global market challenges.

A notable aspect of this employment landscape is the significant presence of women in the workforce, constituting 46.7% of all employed individuals. The Swiss labor market continues to show strong support for flexible working arrangements, with 2.3 million people working part-time, of whom 69.3% are women.

The growth in employment has been observed across both major sectors of the Swiss economy. The secondary sector, encompassing industry and construction, recorded a modest increase of 6,700 positions (+0.6%), bringing the total to 1.1 million jobs. Meanwhile, the tertiary sector (services) demonstrated stronger growth, adding 41,600 positions (+1%) to reach 4.4 million jobs.

When examining full-time equivalent positions, the total volume of employment reached 4.3 million, representing an increase of 40,800 (+1%) compared to the previous year. This growth in full-time equivalent positions indicates a robust demand for labor across the Swiss economy.

The recruitment landscape in Switzerland shows interesting shifts, with companies reporting 17.1% fewer vacancies compared to the previous year. This decline affected both the secondary (-17.5%) and tertiary (-17%) sectors. The overall vacancy rate stands at 1.6% of all jobs, with slight variations between the secondary (1.9%) and tertiary (1.5%) sectors.

Recruitment challenges have eased somewhat, with difficulties in hiring qualified personnel decreasing by 2.5 percentage points to 37.6%. This shift suggests a gradual balancing of the labor market, though significant recruitment challenges persist in certain sectors and specializations.

Looking ahead, Swiss businesses express cautious optimism about employment prospects, though with slightly tempered expectations compared to previous years. The percentage of companies planning to increase their workforce has decreased to 11.7% from 12.5% in 2023, while those anticipating reductions have increased to 4.7% from 4%.

Despite these more conservative projections, the Swiss labor market continues to demonstrate fundamental strength. The Employment Outlook indicator shows only a slight year-on-year decline from -0.9% to 1.04%, suggesting continued stability in the face of global economic uncertainties.
