Swiss e-ID project faces new referendum challenge

Switzerland's latest attempt to implement a national electronic identity system faces a fresh challenge as referendum committees announce the collection of over 60,000 signatures opposing the revised project. The current challenge follows a pattern of careful deliberation over digital identity in Switzerland. A previous e-ID proposal was rejected by voters in 2021, demonstrating Swiss citizens' cautious approach to digital governance reforms. The new e-ID proposal has been designed as a free and optional service for Swiss citizens. The Mass-Voll anti-vax movement separately reported collecting 55,000 signatures, indicating some discrepancy in the total opposition numbers.

The government plans to implement the e-ID system by 2026, pending the outcome of this referendum challenge. The collected signatures must first be verified before a national vote can be scheduled.
