Swiss Air Rescue Reports 30% Surge in Holiday Emergency Calls

Switzerland's premier air rescue service, Rega, reported a significant 30% increase in emergency calls during the 2024-25 New Year period. The organization conducted 240 rescue missions between December 31, 2024, and January 2, 2025, marking a substantial rise from the previous year's figures. This surge in emergency responses highlights the increasing demands on Swiss emergency services during peak holiday periods.

The spike in rescue missions was largely attributed to favorable mountain weather conditions that attracted numerous winter sports enthusiasts. More than half of Rega's missions involved accidents related to winter sports activities. The service also responded to medical emergencies, including cases of strokes and cardiovascular issues. Mission volumes varied significantly with weather conditions, with sunny New Year's Eve and New Year's Day seeing higher activity compared to the overcast Berchtold Day.

Air Zermatt, another crucial rescue service provider, reported 112 helicopter rescue missions between December 24 and January 2. The service experienced particularly intense activity on December 27 and 31, with 19 missions conducted on each day. Additionally, their ground ambulance services completed 51 missions during this period, demonstrating the comprehensive nature of emergency response in the Swiss Alps.

Looking at the broader picture, Air Zermatt maintained consistent operation levels throughout 2024, conducting approximately 2,100 helicopter missions, comparable to the previous year's figures. Their ambulance services also remained steady with over 1,100 missions. This data, combined with the holiday surge, indicates a growing trend in rescue service demands, particularly during peak tourist seasons in Switzerland's mountain regions.
