Geographic proximity is proving to be a double-edged sword for the cantons of Geneva and Vaud. These regions, alongside Basel City, are currently grappling with the highest incidence rates of vehicle theft in the nation. The reason is as clear as it is concerning: easy access to international borders. Samuel Gétaz, head of SRO claims at AXA, confirms that organized gangs are systematically targeting these areas to facilitate rapid exits from Swiss territory. Once a vehicle is stolen in Geneva, it can be across the French border in minutes, disappearing into a labyrinth of international trafficking routes before the owner even realizes it is gone. In contrast, landlocked cantons like Obwalden and Glarus remain remarkably safe, highlighting a stark regional divide in criminal activity. Ticino also remains a high-risk zone, consistently surpassing the national average for the past decade. This border-centric crime wave suggests that urban density and transit accessibility are the primary catalysts for the current crisis.
