"We couldn't wait to come to Basel again"
"Everyone is welcome, whether Swiss or not"
Basel's renowned Fasnacht carnival commenced its 2025 edition with the traditional Morgestraich, drawing unprecedented numbers of Swiss expatriates and international visitors. At precisely 4:00 AM on Monday, the city center plunged into darkness, illuminated only by the intricate lanterns of carnival participants. The mild temperature of 8°C contributed to exceptional attendance, as visitors from across Europe converged on Basel's historic streets.
The Swiss Club of Strasbourg exemplified the strong connection between Swiss abroad communities and their cultural heritage, organizing their second group visit since 2023. Club president Sébastien Oberlé led a diverse group that departed Strasbourg at 1:40 AM to participate in the celebrations. 'We couldn't wait to come to Basel again,' remarked Oberlé, emphasizing the inclusive nature of the event with his statement that 'everyone is welcome, whether Swiss or not.'
Since its UNESCO World Heritage listing in 2017, Basel's Fasnacht has gained increased international recognition while maintaining its authentic traditions. The carnival continues to serve as a vital link between Switzerland and its global diaspora, combining centuries-old customs with contemporary cultural expression. The event's ability to attract Swiss abroad communities highlights its role in preserving and sharing Swiss cultural heritage.
The 2025 carnival theme 'be as you want' reflects contemporary discussions about self-determination and gender debates. This year's Blaggedde (carnival badge) features a character combining various traditional costumes and carnival elements, symbolizing the event's embrace of diversity while honoring Basel's carnival traditions. The badge serves both as a carnival permit and a crucial fundraising tool for the participating musical groups.
