The ICOS Cities project has transformed Zurich into a living laboratory for climate monitoring. The city's unique topography, nestled between forested hills and Lake Zurich, required a sophisticated multi-modal approach. The network comprises 60 low-cost sensors mounted on streetlamps and trees, high-precision instruments on mobile phone antennas, and a central measuring tower in Hardau. Zurich's Climate Ambitions
Zurich has set an ambitious target to achieve net-zero emissions by 2040, a full decade ahead of Switzerland's national 2050 goal. This commitment is backed by strong public support, with 75% of residents voting in favor of the accelerated timeline. Current measurements show promising progress, with the city already achieving a 37% reduction in CO2 emissions since 2012, bringing the total down to 2.4 million tonnes of CO2 equivalents in 2022.
Technical Implementation

The system includes background CO2 data collection from three measuring towers outside the city and one on the Jungfraujoch mountain.
