Swissgrid Unveils CHF5.5 Billion Power Grid Investment Plan

Switzerland's national grid operator Swissgrid has unveiled an ambitious CHF5.5 billion investment plan to modernize and expand the country's electricity infrastructure by 2040. This landmark announcement represents one of the largest infrastructure investments in Switzerland's energy sector, aimed at ensuring long-term energy security and meeting future power demands. The comprehensive strategy encompasses 31 major projects, addressing three key challenges: decarbonization, digitalization, and decentralization of the power grid.

The expansion project includes the construction of 790 kilometers of new power lines across Switzerland's challenging terrain. Additionally, Swissgrid plans to increase voltage and power capacity on 400 kilometers of the existing 6,700-kilometer grid network. The strategy prioritizes overhead lines, following government guidelines, while balancing environmental considerations. A significant portion of the project focuses on renovating 1,300 kilometers of aging infrastructure, addressing the crucial fact that two-thirds of the current lines have been in service for over 60 years.

A key component of the modernization plan is the installation of 21 new controllable transformers, significantly enhancing the grid's control capabilities. Of these, 10 will replace existing units while 11 represent new installations, bringing the total number of controllable transformers to 43. These sophisticated devices are crucial for managing electricity flows and facilitating power imports, strengthening Switzerland's position in the European energy network. The upgrades will incorporate smart grid technologies, enabling better management of renewable energy sources and improving overall grid efficiency.

The investment strategy reflects Switzerland's commitment to sustainable energy development and economic growth.
