New Entry-Exit System Launches at Swiss Airports

Switzerland is taking a significant step forward in modernizing its border control operations with the implementation of a new Entry-Exit System (EES). This Schengen-wide electronic registration system marks a departure from traditional manual passport stamping, bringing Swiss airports into alignment with the latest digital border management technologies. The initiative, announced by the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM), represents a major shift in how Switzerland processes non-EU travelers at its international airports.

The rollout of the EES follows a carefully planned schedule across Swiss airports. Basel-Mulhouse and Geneva airports are pioneering the implementation, with the system going live on October 12, 2025. Zurich Airport, Switzerland's largest international hub, will follow suit on November 17. Smaller regional airports, including Lugano, Dübendorf, and Bern, have until the end of March 2026 to integrate the new system. This phased approach allows for smooth transition and system optimization at each location.

The new EES introduces advanced features that significantly enhance border security and immigration control. Key among these is the automatic calculation of authorized stay durations and the mandatory collection of biometric data, including facial images and fingerprints. This digital system enables more reliable identification of undocumented persons and helps combat identity fraud. Law enforcement authorities will have restricted access to EES information for fighting serious crime and terrorism. The system also provides migration authorities with improved capabilities to identify individuals who have exceeded their authorized stay period.

The EES primarily affects nationals from visa-free third countries planning stays of up to 90 days in the Schengen area. Swiss citizens, EU/EFTA nationals, and those with valid Schengen residence permits will not experience changes to their travel procedures. During the transition period, which extends until April 9, 2026, both electronic registration and manual passport stamping will coexist. Travelers should anticipate potentially longer waiting times during this phase and are advised to allocate additional time for airport procedures. After April 2026, digital registration will completely replace manual passport stamping, marking a full transition to the modernized border control system.
